INDIANAPOLIS — A 36-year-old man who was viciously stabbed to death by a Bloomington woman while getting into the shower last month has died at an Indianapolis hospital, authorities confirm.

Briley Shayne Turner, 25, was arrested on Aug. 18 in connection with the stabbing. She was originally charged by the Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office with one count of attempted murder, a Level 1 felony, in addition to one count of aggravated battery, a Level 3 felony.

Now, Turner also faces one count of murder.

Previous reports detail the vicious assault that occurred on Aug. 18. Neighbors heard screaming coming from the Kinser Flats apartment complex shortly before 7 p.m.

Responding police officers ended up busting down a door where they found Turner lying on the couch covered in blood. But she had no wounds.

On the bathroom floor, police found 36-year-old Michael Ray Hodge bleeding profusely from multiple stab wounds. Investigators ultimately concluded that Hodge was hit with a baseball bat before being stabbed at least nine times with a knife and a “tire plug tool with a metal spike on it.”

Hodge told police that Turner assaulted him suddenly, at first with the bat, as the two were about to get into the shower. He claims no reason was given for the attack and that the two had not been arguing prior to the sudden assault.

Turner reportedly expressed strange behavior when police arrived on scene, making “jerking motions with her extremities” and moaning loudly and making whimpering sounds.

Court records show Turner has a history of meth use , recently serving a short 14-day stint in jail after being charged with possession of meth in 2022.

Court documents reveal that Hodge ended up being transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for surgery following the attack. Bloomington police confirmed that nearly a month later, on Sept. 11, Hodge was still at Methodist Hospital when he passed away.

Documents reveal that an autopsy confirmed that Hodge died as a result of his injuries suffered in the stabbing. His death was ruled a homicide.

In the wake of Hodge’s death and the autopsy’s findings, the Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office filed an additional charge of murder against Turner.

In Indiana, a murder conviction can carry a prison sentence of 45 to 65 years in addition to the possibility of life imprisonment and even execution.
