Bloomington 16-year-old charged in after-school knife threat, attempted $5 robbery at McDonald’s

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — A Bloomington high schooler now faces two felony charges after allegedly pointing a knife at a fellow student in an attempt to steal $5 after school.

The suspect, a 16-year-old Bloomington High School South student, has been charged with attempted robbery and intimidation with a deadly weapon in relation to the incident. The charges would be considered felonies if he is tried as an adult, police confirmed Thursday.

The charges stem from an after-school incident in which the suspect reportedly threatened another 16-year-old with a knife that had a six-inch blade. The victim told police he had walked to the McDonald’s along S. Walnut Street after school let out prior to the incident.

The victim told police that after placing his food order at the counter, another student that he knew just by first name approached him and pulled a knife from a sheath on his right side. The victim claimed that the student asked him for $5, to which he responded he didn’t have it.

The victim then reportedly left the restaurant and called his parents, who then reported the incident to Bloomington police. The 16-year-old told officers that the suspect had attempted to make light of the attempted robbery and shake his hand before he fled with his food.

A BPD officer reportedly reviewed the restaurant’s security camera footage, which they said corroborated the victim’s story. Police then identified and located the suspect, and reportedly found the same knife seen in the video inside of his backpack.

BPD confirmed Thursday that the 16-year-old suspect was then taken into police custody on two charges that are considered felonies if committed by adults. Police records show he was transported Monday to a secure juvenile detention center.

Bloomington Police did not provide any more information regarding the incident. The arrested suspect is not being named as he is a minor.
