“This sentence is a testament to law enforcement’s commitment to holding those accountable who resort to acts of violence on our roadways,” said Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears.

The road rage shooting took place on July 18, 2022. On that date, Indiana State Police received a call from the driver of a red Ford Focus. According to a media release from the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, that driver was on I-70 eastbound near Post Road when shots were fired. Those shots struck Hickerson, who was in the the passenger seat of the Focus.

After the shooting, the driver of the Focus headed to a nearby hospital, where Hickerson was later pronounced dead.

An investigation found that the suspect who shot Hickerson was erratically driving a white box truck on I-465. Per MCPO, the driver of the box truck displayed a firearm through the window and fired multiple shots.

Investigators also learned that the truck belonged to a concrete construction business. The truck is believed to have been travelling from I-65 to I-465 after completing a job in Columbus earlier in the day.

That driver turned out to be Dion Kimbrough.

After receiving and executing a warrant, officers then searched Kimbrough’s residence. There, they discovered a firearm and shell casings that matched what was found at the scene.
