INDIANAPOLIS — An Indy man has been sentenced to nearly 70 years in prison for shooting and killing another man following a dispute over money on the city’s near southeast side four years ago.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office announced Monday afternoon that Rasheed Bass was sentenced to 68 years in prison after being found guilty of murder, felony murder, armed robbery (level 3 felony), unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon (level 4 felony) and carrying a handgun without a license (level 5 felony).

According to previous reports , officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called on Dec. 3, 2020, to the 1600 block of Harlan Street on reports of a person shot. Officers arrived and reportedly found a victim, identified as Justus Hudson, sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Detectives began investigating and soon determined that the shooting initially occurred at a nearby market.

MCPO said witnesses informed detectives that Bass and Hudson arranged to meet before the shooting took place. It is believed that the victim possibly owed Bass some money, according to MCPO.

Hudson and Bass were each driven to the market by other people. When Bass arrived, he reportedly told his driver to pull directly behind the vehicle Hudson was inside.

Bass approached the vehicle and opened the door to speak with Hudson. A brief altercation ensued before Bass reportedly opened fire, MCPO said. Hudson, who was 27 years old at the time, was transported to an area hospital in critical condition where he later died.

Hudson’s driver then put the vehicle into reverse and fled the scene after striking the vehicle Bass arrived in. MCPO said Hudson’s driver then called 911.

Investigators ultimately connected Bass to the deadly shooting as a result of witness testimony, which provided authorities with Bass’ description, his nickname and his phone number.
