MORGAN COUNTY, Ind. — Morgan County Sheriff detectives, stymied by language and cultural barriers within Indianapolis’ Chin community, are moving closer to a solution to an early morning shooting that left a Marion County teenager dead on a rural road five miles outside of Monrovia Sunday.

Thawng Tha Sang, 18, of Indianapolis, was discovered on Robb Hill Road near the intersection of State Roads 142 & 39 by deputies responding to a report of shots fired at a home a half-mile up the road.

”Apparently, there was a party there, and quite a few adults and kids from the local area to there were at the party there,” said Morgan County Sheriff Rich Myers. ”But there was an altercation that transpired and right during that altercation, gunfire erupted, and unfortunately, this individual was hit.”

Myers said as many as three vehicles containing several individuals from the southside of Indianapolis were at the Morgan County address when a 911 call was received after midnight Sunday morning.

“How the individuals who came down made this party or found out about this party is still being investigated,” said Myers. “And why they would have, what the connection there is.”

Myers said IMPD is also assisting Morgan County investigators who are finding it difficult to match up the accounts of partygoers and the visitors from Marion County.

”There’s a lot of players in this, just a lot of background, lot of interviews still going on right now, just try to find out what this connection is between the folks that were down here from the Burmese area and then what they had to do with it from the Morgan County side of it,” said Myers. ”It’s just involved with such a large group of people there, with the people that we’re interviewing and the language barrier that we’re being introduced to and some of the forthcoming information that’s not forthcoming.”

Myers said such gun violence in Morgan County is rare.

”The disturbing part of it is the gunplay, period. It seems to be the way or what we see in our county, unfortunately, north of us and way of the country right now,” said Myers.

Anyone with information on what led up to the fatal shooting of Thawng Tha Sang in Morgan County Sunday morning is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS.
