Planned Parenthood to provide gender-affirming care at all 11 Indiana locations

INDIANAPOLIS — Planned Parenthood is planning to make gender-affirming care available at all its Indiana locations.

According to a press release, gender-affirming care will be available to patients who are at least 18 years of age or older. Planned Parenthood indicated that it is expanding access to gender-affirming care by increasing appointment availability in addition to making the service available at all of its facilities.

Planned Parenthood asserted that its decision to expand gender-affirming care programs is “in response to a growing community need.” The organization also added that gender-affirming care “allows individuals to fully embrace and affirm their true identity, empowering them to live authentically as the people they have always been.”

Planned Parenthood reported that it has seen a 23% increase in patient demand for gender-affirming care in Indiana over the past year. Among the gender-affirming care services the organization is making available are hormone replacement therapy, gender-affirming hair preservation, surgery coordination and other medical transition support.

Planned Parenthood’s gender-affirming care patients will also have access to a “GAC Navigator,” who can help connect patients with care providers, assist with name and gender marker changes and support appeals of insurance rejections for hormone care.

Planned Parenthood’s providers are trained in gender-affirming care and use the informed consent model. In a press release, the organization wrote that the model allows patients to access hormone therapy without needing a therapist’s diagnosis.

The 11 Planned Parenthood care centers in Indiana are located in Bloomington, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Hammond, Indianapolis, Lafayette, Merrillville, Mishawaka and New Albany.
