INDIANAPOLIS — A 19-year-old student at an Indianapolis high school now faces a felony charge after he reportedly punched and kicked a substitute teacher during class last week.

Aziz Mahamadou, a student at George Washington High School, was arrested last Tuesday on the school’s campus by IPS police after the reported attack. Madamadou has been charged with one count of Level 6 Felony battery and is currently being held at the Criminal Justice Center awaiting a bail hearing.

    The attack

In a written statement from around 11 a.m. on Sept. 10, the substitute teacher described the attack to police. The teacher said he was discussing GWHS’ upcoming football game against Crispus Attucks when Mahamadou stood up from his desk and walked toward him.

The teacher told officers that Mahamadou punched him in the mouth three times with his right hand, causing him to fall to the ground.

Once the teacher was on the ground, students said Mahamadou began kicking him in the ribs.

“You don’t think I don’t speak English,” the student reportedly yelled during the attack.

The teacher said that after the attack, Mahamadou tried to sit back down at his desk but was told he had to go to the principal’s office. School police soon arrived and took Mahamadou into custody.

    Aftermath

Police officials said that the teacher was taken to a medical clinic for treatment of his injuries.

He reportedly lost consciousness after the second punch and was later diagnosed with a concussion. He also told police he had a cracked rib and a knot on his head from the incident.

Meanwhile, Mahamadou was detained and taken by officers to the Criminal Justice Center. He now faces a preliminary charge of battery resulting in moderate bodily injury.

Online court records show that an initial hearing in Mahamadou’s case was held at 8:30 a.m. Monday in Marion Superior Court 19. A bail review hearing is now scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 2.

    School reaction

In a statement sent Monday to FOX59/CBS4, Indianapolis Public Schools addressed the attack.

    Violence at Indy schools

This is not the first case of violence and threats this school year at an Indianapolis-area school.

A 15-year-old Perry Meridian High School student was arrested last Thursday by school police officers after an “unprovoked and violent hallway attack” on a fellow student. The victim’s family said their son was the subject of ongoing bullying and that they’re now looking into legal action.

State Police announced last Friday afternoon that troopers from the Indianapolis Post arrested two juveniles – ages 12 and 15 – for allegedly making school threats the week before.

Last Thursday, police in Richmond arrested a 14-year-old after the FBI reported the student was making threats against the high school on Snapchat.

Marion police arrested two juveniles accused of making online threats at two local schools last week. Last Tuesday, police arrested a student for allegedly making online threats at an unspecified school within the Warren Township Metropolitan School District.

Earlier this month, Anderson police arrested a student who allegedly threatened to bring a gun to class. Indiana State Police also arrested a Perry Meridian student two weeks ago for making alleged threats.

In February, a 16-year-old student at PMHS was arrested for reportedly attacking a substitute teacher and repeatedly hitting him in the face with a laptop. The student has since been charged with battery and criminal recklessness in juvenile court. For more information, click here .
