INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis man has been arrested on murder charges after he reportedly shot and killed 57-year-old Michael Alvin Edwards after Edwards reportedly owed him money.
According to court documents filed on Tuesday in Marion County, 32-year-old Thomas Mason Jr. was arrested on murder charges on Monday in relation to the shooting on Aug. 29.
Edwards was found at around 8:12 p.m. on Aug. 29 after officers were called to the 3400 block of N. Leland Avenue. When officers arrived, they found a man, later identified as Edwards, who was shot inside a green truck. Edwards was taken to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
‘Rhyker was at risk for so many reasons:’ Indiana father dies after police encounter following seizure, attorney says On the evening of the shooting, officers conducted a search of the vehicle that Edwards was found in, as well as a nearby house on North Leland Avenue. After speaking with witnesses, they found that two SUVs were seen leaving the area shortly after the shooting.
On Sept. 8, a witness to the shooting spoke to officers. The witness, identified by police as a woman, said that she was with Edwards that evening. The two went to a home on North Leland Avenue when a man, known to her as “Boosie” approached the vehicle.
“Boosie,” who was later identified by police as Mason, reportedly demanded money that was owed to him by Edwards. During the altercation, the woman exited the truck and walked toward the house on North Leland Avenue.
The documents said that she heard something drop during the altercation. When the witnessed turned to see what it was, she reportedly saw “Boosie” pick up a large silver handgun and shoot Edwards three times when he was sitting in the green truck.
IU student charged with raping two women One of the SUVs on the scene was linked to Mason after it was found to have multiple rust spots and missing rear door handles. The witness also reportedly identified Mason as the suspect in a photo array.
Detectives later found a phone number for Mason and used phone records to track him to a home on East 38th Street. As they conducted surveillance on the home, Mason was seen exiting and entering the home.
After Mason left the house on foot earlier this month, the documents said he was taken into custody and transported to the department’s homicide office. Mason declined to give a statement to police and was subsequently arrested on preliminary murder charges.
