ISP: 1 dead after fiery crash involving car, semi on Interstate 465

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana State Police are investigating a fiery crash that left a person dead Sunday morning.

According to ISP, troopers were called to mile marker 42.8 on Interstate 465 northbound around 6:58 a.m. on a report of a serious crash. ISP reported that several callers told dispatchers a car had struck the back end of a semi, gotten stuck underneath it and caught fire.

The Indianapolis Fire Department was also called to the scene to help extinguish the fire and search for crash victims. After a search, officials determined 29-year-old Alexis Hollins of Merrillville — the lone occupant of the vehicle that struck the semi — was injured in the crash.

Hollins was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene. The semi’s driver was not injured in the crash.

During a preliminary investigation of the incident, troopers determined Hollins was driving a 2022 Chevrolet Corvette in the left lane of I-465 northbound before the crash unfolded. The crash happened when Hollins suddenly crossed multiple lanes of traffic, losing control of the car.

After crossing through traffic, the Corvette Hollins was driving struck the rear end of a semi that was stopped on the right shoulder of the road. The force of the impact caused the Corvette to slide underneath the semi’s trailer and catch fire, according to ISP.

State police believe speed was a factor in the crash. As of this article’s publication, no additional information on the incident had been made available.
