Pedestrian who was struck by IMPD squad car dies at local hospital

INDIANAPOLIS — A pedestrian who was struck by an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department squad car eight days ago has died.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office reported that 58-year-old Rodney D. Huffman died at a local hospital on Saturday. At the time of the crash, IMPD indicated an on-duty officer struck Huffman with a marked police car near the intersection of Michigan Road and Double Tree Boulevard.

Police reported that medics were called to the scene to render aid to Huffman, who was later transported to a local hospital in critical condition. The IMPD officer who struck Huffman was not injured during the incident.

IMPD’s internal affairs unit is investigating the incident, as is the agency’s certified crash team. After a preliminary examination of the crash, police believe Huffman was crossing Michigan Road from west to east when the officer struck him.

Before the crash began, the officer was turning out of a parking lot onto Michigan Road.

The officer who allegedly struck the pedestrian was subjected to a blood draw, as is standard procedure for all drivers involved in serious crashes. Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

IMPD has reported that the officer involved in the incident in currently on full-duty status.
