INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis driver is in jail accused of leaving the scene of a deadly hit-and-run crash over the weekend on Michigan Road.

Witnesses told police the suspect was driving south and turned left at a yellow light. At the same time, the victim went through the yellow light driving north.

Surveillance video confirms witnesses’ description of the suspect turning directly in front of the victim who was riding a motorcycle.

That crash claimed the life of 23-year-old Kasen Jackson Saturday night.

“They say things get better with time.  I pray it does, but this is really hard,” said the victim’s father Anthony Jackson.

Anthony said his son absolutely loved to ride his motorcycle, which he bought earlier this year.

“He just wanted a bike. He saved up his money and paid cash for the bike. He bought it April 20th and rode it every day until Sept. 21st,” said Jackson.

Kasen had never been in trouble and was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“He was a great kid and we’re going to miss him dearly,” said Jackson. “He was the absolute best kid in the world.”

Police claim after the crash, 21-year-old Kevin Matheus tore off the rear license plate and fled on foot, but left his family member’s SUV on scene.

“This person obviously wasn’t the brightest and tried to take the plate off the car, but you know there’s a VIN number on there,” said Jackson.

According to the preliminary affidavit, the suspect confessed he left the scene because he was scared and went to his uncle’s house. That uncle convinced the suspect to turn himself in.

Jackson is now the 23rd person killed in a hit-and-run in Indianapolis this year. That is the most of any year in recent history.

That’s why Jackson’s father has a message for everyone who gets behind the wheel.

“Just be responsible drivers and do the right thing and his family member did the right thing by turning him in,” said Jackson.

Ultimately it will be up to the prosecutor’s office to file formal charges.

In the meantime, the suspect is being held on a federal detainer while his immigration status is reviewed.
