INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis man will spend over half a century in prison after being found guilty of shooting and killing his cousin during a 2022 argument.

Emmanuel Newman was convicted of murder in August after a three-day jury trial. On Wednesday, he was sentenced to 60 years in prison.

The murder charge stems from a Dec. 2022 shooting in which Newman’s cousin, 31-year-old Joshua Hopson, was shot and killed outside a north Indy apartment complex.

IMPD crews were called just before 3 a.m. to the 3400 block of Alsuda Court, near East Fall Creek Parkway and Binford Boulevard, for an argument that led to a shooting.

Upon arrival at the Lodge Apartments, officers reportedly found Hopson lying in front of the building suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

According to court records, the deadly shooting started with an argument between cousins and ended when Hopson walked out his front door and was ambushed by gunfire. IMPD officers arrested Newman eight days later on Jan. 5 and charged him with murder.

Hopson’s girlfriend at the time spoke with police and told them Hopson had been arguing with Newman about family before the shooting happened. Newman then reportedly left the apartment complex only to return a short time later.

The girlfriend said Newman called and threatened to kill the victim, who told the suspect, “I’m coming outside. I’m unarmed.” Police said surveillance cameras then showed Newman drive into the parking lot, walk around with a rifle, shoot Hopson and drive away in a dark Cadillac.

Previous FOX59/CBS4 reports show that after Newman was arrested, he refused to speak with detectives and requested an attorney. Later on, police reportedly found the murder weapon inside Newman’s home.

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said in a statement Wednesday that domestic gun violence is becoming more and more of an issue in Indianapolis.

“Gun violence among family members is becoming more prevalent,” stated Prosecutor Mears. “This sentence demonstrates our commitment to holding individuals accountable who resort to senseless violence to solve a conflict. Our thoughts remain with the family as they move forward from this unthinkable tragedy.”
