INDIANAPOLIS – The 33rd running of the Heartland International Film Festival is bringing hundreds of movies, documentaries and shorts to Indianapolis big screens this weekend.
FOX59/CBS4 went out to Newfields Friday night to check out the world premiere of a brand-new sci-fi film called ReEntry .
It’s one of hundreds of films that Hoosier movie lovers can come out and see at this year’s Heartland International Film Festival.
Film gurus and fanatics filled the seats inside the theater at Newfields Friday night.
The festival is a bit of a tradition for many.
“I have all my tickets right here. We bought tickets for three and I think we bought 20 tickets,” said attendee Debbie Bossi.
Several Heartland visitors said they try and attend as many screenings as possible. And there’s no shortage of options, with more than 120 independent films this year.
“The films are amazing. I mean it’s wonderful cause, we get to see a lot of them firsthand before anyone else is able to,” said Bossi.
FOX59/CBS4 spoke to the people with the film ReEntry which is a romantic sci-fi drama about a woman whose husband disappears in a scientific experiment, only to return a year later.
“For her, it’s been the worst year of her life,” said ReEntry writer and producer, Daniel Nayeri. “For him, it was just 10 seconds. And so the story is very much about their marriage and how you navigate that kind of change when one person has had this very traumatic experience when the other has no point of reference for it.”
The film’s star, Emily Deschanel walked out on the red carpet and attended the debut.
The former Bones actress said it’s a treat to watch it with Hoosier movie lovers for the first time.
“I’m always excited to see a project that I’m involved in with people because you get that feedback and you get to see whether they’re sad, they’re excited or laughing,” said Deschanel.
The festival features 17 world premieres this year and more than 230 screenings.
“We get to bring so many films that otherwise won’t make it to the big screen and give our audience the chance to learn something they didn’t know, feel something they didn’t know they could feel with these stories,” said Adam Howell, the vice president of the Heartland International Film Festival. “While maybe not every film is for everybody, we do have a film for everybody.”
