Possibly overdosing man drove on rims while fleeing from deputies, court docs reveal

HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. — A convicted drug dealer who was allegedly high on fentanyl led sheriff’s deputies on a chase earlier this month. Not even all of his tires being blown out could stop him from trying to flee.

Carlos Ingram, 45, of Indianapolis, has been charged with dealing in cocaine and dealing in a narcotic drug, both Level 2 felonies, in addition to several other criminal charges including possession of cocaine, resisting law enforcement, operating while intoxicated and reckless driving.

Court documents reveal that sheriff’s deputies first spotted Ingram’s black Chevrolet Suburban on Oct. 3 in Greenfield near 100 North and 600 West. A caller had reported the Suburban as suspicious, telling dispatch the vehicle had been stopped in the roadway outside the caller’s home.

A deputy ended up following the Suburban and noted erratic and dangerous driving, including the driver of the Suburban suddenly slamming on the brakes and stopping in the middle of a roadway — which nearly caused a collision.

Court documents reveal the deputy attempted to pull the Suburban over but the vehicle refused to stop. Deputies chased after the Suburban, which allegedly ran through stop signs and nearly hit several mailboxes and roadway signs.

Deputies ended up deploying stop sticks in an attempt to stop the Suburban. But even after all the tires were shredded by the stop sticks, the Suburban continued to drive along on bare rims.

According to court documents, the Suburban eventually lost control and fishtailed, leaving the roadway and coming to a stop in a field.

Deputies instructed the driver, later identified as Ingram, to exit the vehicle. Ingram was allegedly stumbling around, off-balance, and “seemed to be overdosing,” according to a deputy.

Ingram reportedly admitted to using fentanyl and was taken to a hospital for medical attention.

A search of Ingram’s Suburban revealed numerous drugs, including cocaine, heroin and Naloxone.

Deputies also ran the VIN for the Suburban and discovered the vehicle was reported as stolen out of Marion County. It was also discovered that Ingram was currently on federal probation for a drug dealing conviction.

In fact, Ingram has a long history of drug charges. In 2018, Ingram was hit with multiple drug dealing felonies in Marion County. His charges ended up being dismissed, but Ingram did plead guilty in federal court to possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and meth.

Ingram was given a six-year stint in federal prison followed by five years on federal probation.
