GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — The number of animals being brought into the Guilford County Animal Resource Center is pushing it to the limit.

Shelter leaders tell us they’re near capacity.

About 100 animals rescued from home on Prospect Street in High Point

Unfortunately, leaders believe the situation will get worse unless the community steps in to help.

6-year-old Godiva is a dog who loves treats and back rubs.

She is one of the many animals up for adoption at the GCARS, and officials say the building is close to capacity because of the uptick in surrenders.

Assistant Director of Animal Welfare Lise Lee says the adoption center located off Guilford College Road in Greensboro can hold up to 500 animals.

Though the intake and outtake of animals change on a day-to-day basis, Lee says a mix of people simply surrendering their pets and spring kitten season has overwhelmed the shelter.

“We’re getting a lot of neonates. Little tiny kittens,” Lee said.

To alleviate that influx and avoid reaching capacity, Lee is asking the community to take advantage of their Stray to Foster Program.

“We ask you to foster that animal for the 72-hour mandatory stray hold. It keeps that animal out of the shelter and it creates space for us. You foster the animal for 72 hours. We can provide you with food, crates, supplies, whatever you need to make sure the animal is safe and healthy in your home. And then after that 72 hours, you bring that animal back, and we get it ready for adoptions,” Lee said.
