SURRY COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating a deputy-involved shooting.
At around 12:44 p.m. on Tuesday, deputies with the Surry County Sheriff’s Office tried to serve a domestic violence restraining order at a home on the 100 block of West Imogene Road.
Investigators say that 63-year-old Roger Dale Payne barricaded himself inside a home once deputies arrived at the scene.
Deputies say that attempts were made to negotiate with Payne. However, those were not successful.
Payne then allegedly fired shots and deputies “deployed a combination of non-lethal and lethal force,” in response.
Payne suffered non-life-threatening and received treatment on-scene before being taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. He was later released from the hospital and is now in custody at the detention center.
No deputies were injured during the shooting.
“We are committed to the safety of our community and our deputies,” said Sheriff Steve C. Hiatt. “Our deputies are trained to respond with the appropriate level of force in highly dangerous situations like this, and we are thankful that no deputies were harmed.”
Payne is being charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill on an emergency worker, assault on a law on enforcement officer with a firearm and resisting a public officer.
He was given a $200,000 secured bond and will appear in court on August 21.
On Tuesday night, the sheriff’s office confirmed that the incident was a deputy-involved shooting.
The investigation into the shooting has been turned over to the NCSBI, as is standard procedure.
