GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — 84 families will soon have a new place to call home.

Yanceyville Place Apartments in Greensboro will start leasing the new affordable housing units in a few weeks. Hundreds of people are already interested.

The process is first come, first served. There is an income requirement based on the size of your family. The rent will range between $325 to $875 per month for a 12-month lease.

Once the leases are signed, people can move into the brand-new apartments soon.

“We are very much in the homestretch,” said Bobby Funk, the development director at Mills Construction.

They are putting on the final touches to building a bright future for families.

There are a total of 84 apartments. Each building has 12 units, and they either have one, two or three bedrooms.

“This design has units that run the full length of the building, so you have much more natural light than some other apartments,” Funk said.

But it’s more than just the windows and the walls.

“We were totally thrilled,” said Beth McKee-Huger, a deacon at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit. That church is right next door to the new development at 2005 Mitchell Ave.

“We are thrilled you are here, and we all want to be community together,” McKee-Huger said.

The church hosts grocery giveaways and weekly meals for the neighborhood and wants to grow those programs for the new residents.

Their support will also extend to the new property next door.

“They always build a community center … This time at our request, they added two private offices: one suitable for a nurse and one for a social worker so that as we engage community partners to provide services,” McKee-Huger said.

Mills Construction built Yanceyville Place with $18 million of COVID relief funds, tax credits and various other loans. This is their first build in Greensboro.

“It is hard to kind of quantify exactly how much of an impact that can make for families,” Funk said.

But it won’t be their last in Greensboro.

“We are very proud of the work we do … It is not getting any easier to find an affordable place to live, especially for those who are earning on the lower end of the income spectrum,” Funk said.

Even if you don’t get into this development, the builders hope to start next year on an expansion project on the same site with 60 more affordable housing units.
