    Triad schools, nonprofits awarded nearly $16,000 in grants by Dollar General Literacy Foundation

    PIEDMONT TRIAD, N.C. (WGHP) —The Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded nearly $125,000 in youth literacy grants to North Carolina nonprofit organizations, libraries and schools on Thursday. Almost $16,000 of that amount went to organizations in the Piedmont Triad.

    According to a press release, the funds are part of more than $4 million recently awarded nationwide to purchase books, technology, equipment or materials for K-12 students.

    Hope Academy in Greensboro describes itself as a “Christ-centered” school where students receive a private school education without the private school costs in small, interactive classrooms. Hope Academy was rewarded $3,765.

    Eliminating educational barriers for homeless children

    The Center For New North Carolinians at the University of North Carolina Greensboro “promotes access and integration for immigrants and refugees in North Carolina by bridging newcomer populations with existing communities through direct service provision, research, and training,” according to its website. The CNCC was rewarded $4,000.

    The Sister Circle International in High Point is a nonprofit organization “dedicated to the uplifting and advancement of women through biblical teaching, learning, community and civic engagement.” It was rewarded $4,000.

    Liberty East Redevelopment Inc. in Winston-Salem aims “to be an advocate and catalyst for the revitalization of Northeast and East Winston-Salem with an emphasis on education, housing and youth development through the engagement of low- and moderate-income individuals and families,” according to its website. It was rewarded $4,000.

    “We understand investing in youth literacy means investing in the future of students and our collective communities,” shared Denine Torr, executive director of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. “Through these grants, we hope to enhance the programs’ efforts to foster students’ critical thinking skills, creativity and confidence so they can unlock their potential and achieve their dreams.”
