ASHEBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Two American red wolves at the North Carolina Zoo are helping save their species after surviving serious injuries.

The mother and son lost legs after separate injuries that required amputation. Even though they have just three legs, the wolves are thriving in their habitat at the zoo and teaching guests about the plight of their wild counterparts.

American red wolves are critically endangered, only around 20 remain in the wild in Eastern North Carolina. Shannon Smith shows us how the zoo is helping keep this species alive.
