GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — One person was killed in a shooting on Spring Garden Street Thursday night, the Greensboro Police Department reports.

According to a press release, on Thursday, GPD, Greensboro Fire and Guilford County EMS responded to an assault in the 2800 block of Spring Garden Street.

Officials found Davion Jessup, 20, unresponsive in the breezeway of an apartment building.

Jessup was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting is being investigated as a homicide and is Greensboro’s 26th of the year.

24 hours after her son Jessup was killed, Karisha Boney returned to the Campus Crossing Apartment Complex on Spring Garden Street where the shooting took place.

Boney says her son was a junior at North Carolina A&T State University who was enrolled in the management program and lived at the apartment complex over the past two years.

“He was a friend, dedicated, loving, a great sense of humor,” Boney said.

Boney says a neighbor was by her son’s side when first responders arrived.

“He held his hand and said Davion told him his name, and he told him he didn’t want to die. The guy told Davion, ‘You’re not going to die. You’re going to be OK.’ He said he held pressure to his wounds until they got there … From what the police told me, he just went to sleep,” Boney said.

NC A&T State University shared the following message with their student body in the wake of Jessup’s death:
