ROSEBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — A married couple lost everything when their historic home in Roseboro in Sampson County was gutted by flames early Sunday, officials said.

The fire was reported around 2:30 a.m. at 205 N. West Street in Roseboro, said Roseboro Fire Chief Lee Coleman.

When crews arrived at the scene nearly the entire two-story 100+ year-old home was engulfed in flames, he said.

Coleman, who lives about two blocks away, said he could see the glow of the fire in the sky from his home after he was awakened to go to the scene.

The couple who live in the home were out of town on a fishing trip to the beach. No one was hurt in the fire.

But, the couple “lost everything they had” in the fire which took about 90 minutes to get under control, Coleman said.

The blaze caused massive damage to the home with the second-floor ceiling collapsing onto the second floor and the second floor then collapsing onto the first floor, the fire chief said.

Up to 40 firefighters from six different departments worked to get the fire out.

“It was a hard time getting it fully put out,” Coleman said.

The couple are now displaced. The blaze appeared to start on the side of the home where the electrical box was located, Coleman said.

But, the cause of the fire is under investigation.
