RUTHERFORD COUNTY, N.C. (WSPA) — A driver reportedly died following a chase that began in North Carolina and ended in a crash in South Carolina.

The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office said on Friday, August 30, deputies attempted to conduct a stop on a car that was reported stolen.

A chase ensued and led into Cherokee and Spartanburg counties in South Carolina. The Chesnee Police Department and Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the pursuit.

During the pursuit, the stolen vehicle was involved in a crash yet continued fleeing from authorities according to deputies.

Law enforcement deployed stop sticks on SC 11 which deflated one of the rear tires of the vehicle. The car then left the roadway and came to a stop, deputies said.

Officials observed that the driver was suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound which is believed to have occurred before the car left the roadway.

Law enforcement rendered aid to the driver until EMS arrived, deputies said. However, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office has not identified the driver at this time.

The incident remains under investigation by the SCSO and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
