WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — A neighborhood in Winston-Salem was closed down due to potential hazardous materials inside a home.

According to Winston-Salem Police Department, around 10:30 a.m. officers were called to Mary Dee Lane to serve an involuntary commitment to someone experiencing mental health issues. At the scene, officers saw what they believed to be “hazardous” material inside the home.

The “Hazardous Devices Unit” was contacted and residents in close proximity were asked to evacuate.

As of just after 3 p.m., residents are allowed to return to normal activities, because the HDU crew had “secured the scene.”

“HDU thoroughly investigated an unknown substance in the residence. At this time, there is no further danger to the community. The investigation remains ongoing,” Winston-Salem Police Department said.
