GALAX, VA (WGHP) — A man who was charged with indecent liberties in North Carolina earlier in the summer is now facing more criminal accusations.

According to warrants, Charles Wesley Shumaker, 44, of Thomasville, is wanted in Galax, Virginia on a charge of rape by force, threat or intimidation. The warrant was issued on Sept. 3, stemming from a February 2019 incident.

According to warrants, Shumaker raped a woman in Virginia in 2019. Police say they were called about the assault and spoke to the victim, but DNA obtained from her didn’t match anyone in the existing databases.

Then in late August 2024, a match was found from North Carolina and identified as Shumaker. They made contact with the DCSO and determined that Shumaker had worked as a truck driver who had routes into Virginia. This led them to issuing the warrants for the 2019 rape.

Shumaker is not in Galax Police Department custody yet, he was picked up by Davidson County officials. He will have an extradition hearing in Davidson County to determine the next steps in Virginia case.

In early July in Davidson County, he was charged with three counts of felony indecent liberties with a child.
