Two minors arrested in fatal shooting of 14-year-old in North Carolina

UPDATE (WNCT) — The 14-year-old victim in this case, Dior Simmons, has died overnight from his injuries.

The investigation determined that another two 14-year-olds were responsible for his death. One was taken into custody on Tuesday night and police found the other one Wednesday morning. Both suspects are currently in the Pitt County Juvenile Detention Center. Both juveniles are New Bern residents.

The Craven County District Attorney’s Office has authorized charges of 2nd Degree Murder for each teen.

Background

On Tuesday afternoon, officers with the New Bern Police Department were dispatched to the 1300 block of Harrison Street for a report of a gunshot victim near a child development center.

Upon arrival, officers spotted a person suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The responding officers searched the scene and helped the victim who was later transported to CarolinaEast Medical Center, then ECU Health Medical Center. The victim’s condition remains unknown at the time.

The Duffyfield Child Development Center went into lockdown but has reopened since. The investigation is in the early stages but does not appear to be an ongoing threat to the community.
