CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WSPA) – All over the country, first responders, fire fighters and other volunteers hit the stairs in memory of those who responded to the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

For one young girl at Shriners Children’s Greenville, not having legs was not an excuse to not participate.

Luci, a double amputee patient at the children’s hospital, attended a memorial event held at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Wednesday, and joined the procession up and down stairs at the speedway.

She was joined in her climb by a crew of firefighters, all wearing their turnout gear. Also joining her on the climb was Peter Cachia, a former firefighter who was a first responder inside Tower 2.

Every year groups climb 110 flights of stairs in a memorial to firefighters who entered and attempted to rescue those trapped in the World Trade Center towers. Crews are believed to have climbed as many as 110 flights in their efforts on that day.
