GRAHAM, N.C. (WGHP) — Graham City Council members discussed the future of Sesquicentennial Park in Graham and spoke about whether the park needs to be rebuilt, relocated or replaced.

The Sesquicentennial Park has been a staple in downtown Graham since 1999. It was built to celebrate Alamance County’s 150 birthday.

It features a garden, park benches and bricks to memorialize people, but city leaders say it needs to be rebuilt because of foundation issues.

It sits on top of a basement that crews never filled in when they built the park.

Recently, there’s been a push to move the park elsewhere.

People like Ronnie Childress who works in downtown say city leaders should consider asking the families who own bricks in the park first what they want to see done.

City leaders say no matter what happens, they’ll preserve memorial pieces from the park.

As city leaders discuss the park’s future, those who live nearby like Stephen West hope they can find a compromise.

“I just hope the community and city can come together,” West said.

During the Graham City Council meeting, city leaders did not say how much it would cost to repair or relocate the park.

They are seeking bids from contractors.

FOX8 reached out to city leaders about the several options they plan on pursuing in regards to fixing the park.

We are still waiting for a response.
