GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) — A woman was found stabbed to death Wednesday evening in Greenville County. Deputies said she was found by her sister who came to check on her.

The victim has been identified as 40-year-old Maria Teresa Hernandez Hernandez, of Greenville.

Shooting investigation shuts down West Market Street in downtown Greensboro

“From what we understand no one had heard from her for several days so she went over there to check on her because that is the place that she was living and that is whenever she sadly found her body,” Lt. Ryan Flood with the Greenville County Sheriffs Office said.

The victim was discovered on Edgemont Avenue, according to deputies. They said that it was obvious the victim had suffered significant trauma to her body.

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office said the victim had been dead for several days.

“She was last known to be alive on Sunday,” Chief Deputy Coroner, Mike Ellis said. “We determined today she had definitely been dead multiple days.”

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office said Hernandez Hernandez died from multiple stab wounds and her death was ruled a homicide.

According to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office, the cause of death was stab wounds of the neck.

“Due to the situation inside the residence we immediately started treating that case as suspicious and a possible homicide,” Ellis said.

Deputies said they are working to find out who is responsible.

“That is part of our job is finding some sort of closure to bring to the family so they can understand or at least try to understand why,” Lt. Flood said. “It is never easy when you are dealing with the death of another person but whenever a family can have some sort of closure we just hope that it at least eases some of that pain.”

Deputies said they are still investigating and do believe it is an isolated incident, but they have not made any arrests at this time.

Deputies said they believe at least one person is responsible. They are hoping for tips from the community. If you have any information you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 23-CRIME.
