HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating an officer-involved shooting near Surfside Beach from Thursday night, the agency said on Friday.

Neil Wade Brown, 60, was taken into custody at about 11 p.m., Horry County police said. His charges were not immediately available.

Two people were shot in connection with the incident, which started at about 9 p.m. near S. Reindeer Road. SLED said early Friday evening that neither of the two gunshot victims were officers.

An Horry County police report obtained by News13 shows one of the victims was shot in the thigh, while the other was shot in the hip. They were both taken to a hospital, but their conditions were not immediately known.

When officers arrived at S. Reindeer Road, they encountered Brown, who was armed. There was an exchange of gunfire between Brown and the officers, though none of them were injured.

The Horry County Police Department’s special operations unit, a SWAT team, negotiators and a drone operator were all on scene.

This is the first officer-involved shooting in Horry County in 2024 and the 32nd such shooting in South Carolina. In 2023, the state dealt with 43 officer-involved shootings, with the Horry County Police Department only seeing one.
