Flood watch issued for central North Carolina on Monday

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — As storms with heavy rains and gusty winds are forecast to move into central North Carolina from the coast, a flood watch was issued Sunday that starts Monday morning.

The National Weather Service issued the flood watch just after 3:20 p.m. Sunday for all of central and a large portion of eastern North Carolina.

Up to 6 inches of rain is possible in some areas, forecasters said. A watch means that flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.

The flood watch begins early Monday morning and lasts through Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service said.

“Widespread moderate to heavy rain will spread across central North Carolina and result in 2 to 4 inches of rain with locally higher amounts of 6 inches possible,” the flood watch said.

The weather service said it’s not clear where the heaviest rain will fall.

“Highest confidence exists for the Sandhills, Coastal Plain and portions of the northeast Piedmont,” the flood watch said.

In eastern North Carolina, all but the far northeastern part of the state is under a flood watch. Areas not under the watch include Northampton County and Bertie County and points east.

“Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations,” the watch said.
