HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — Investigators are searching for a carjacking suspect or suspects after a police chase through multiple counties in North Carolina on Monday morning.

At around 5:30 a.m. on Monday, Concord police reached out to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office to tell them about a vehicle chase on Interstate 85 Business heading north.

A Rowan County deputy, who was in the area, tried to get in a position to deploy stop sticks but couldn’t do so safely due to traffic. The deputy decided to join in the chase.

A Concord Police Department officer alerted North Carolina State Highway Patrol at around 6 a.m. that they and a Rowan County Sheriff’s Office deputy were involved in a chase with a carjacking suspect. Troopers responded to the area, activated their lights and sirens and joined the pursuit as well.

As the chase neared I-85 in High Point, the suspect made an “abrupt” turn onto the exit for Prospect Street before losing control and driving off of the road, according to Rowan County deputies. The vehicle was “disabled” by stop sticks that were deployed by Thomasville police.

As a trooper began to slow down to follow behind the suspect vehicle, a Rowan County deputy “was unable to stop and the two vehicles collided causing damage to both vehicles.”

Troopers say neither law enforcement officer was injured as a result of the crash, though RCSO confirms that a trooper did go to a local hospital with minor injuries. The trooper has since been released. A deputy was evaluated at the scene.

Troopers say that the suspect, or suspects, ran away from the scene and escaped custody. It is unknown whether or not any injuries were sustained.

Business 85 North was closed for around an hour during the investigation which is still ongoing.
