REIDSVILLE, N.C. (WGHP) — A major shakeup is happening to the high school sports scene in the Triad once again.

Now once-again Reidsville High School dual-sport star Kendre Harrison announced on his social media pages that he will be coming back to Reidsville this year.

Proposed rules would allow NIL for public high school athletes in North Carolina

Harrison — a junior who stands at 6-feet-7-inches tall and weighs 243 pounds — holds the rare distinction of being a top prospect in both basketball and football.

If this all sounds very familiar, it’s because it is. Harrison announced in August that he would be transferring to Providence Day School in Charlotte.

At the time of his transfer, it caused a stir across the North Carolina high school sports scene given the current rules on Name, Image and Likeness.

Private schools are not beholden to the North Carolina Board of Education’s present ruling that forbids most NIL opportunities for public school athletes and Providence Day is a private school.

For his part, Harrison told the Charlotte Observer in August that NIL was not a factor in his decision to transfer to Providence Day saying that he has “no NIL” and went to Providence Day “off the strength of me trying to get better.”

However, earlier in September , the outlook on the future of NIL opportunities for public school athletes in North Carolina changed as the NCBOE heard a recommended proposal to allow for NIL.

The meeting came after the mother of another star athlete in North Carolina, Grimsley High School Quarterback Faizon Brandon, filed a lawsuit against the North Carolina State Board of Education over its rules on endorsements , raising the question of whether or not high school athletes should be able to earn a profit.

Now, Harrison returns to Reidsville and will presumably be well-positioned to profit from NIL opportunities in 2025 when the NCBOE’s new NIL rules would likely go into effect.

The school board is meeting today to determine if Harrison will be eligible to play for the Rams this season.

Under the rules of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, he should be eligible to play since he is transferring back to his original school. However, the final decision rests at the hands of the school board.

    Scouting Report

Harrison is ranked by 247Sports as a four-star prospect in basketball for the Class of 2026. He is the 30th-ranked player in the nation and the second-best player in the state of North Carolina. He is ranked as a four-star prospect by 247Sports in football and is considered the 18th-best player in the Class of 2026 as a tight end and the No.1-tight end in the nation.

Harrison’s stock has skyrocketed in the last year as helped lead Reidsville to state championships in both football and basketball last season.

For the season on the basketball court, Harrison averaged 19.4 points per game, 15.1 rebounds per game and 3.7 blocks per game, according to MaxPreps .

He scored 19 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and blocked five shots to lead the Rams to the title over Farmville Central High School in a thrilling 78-77 overtime victory.

For his efforts, he was named named the 2023-24 MaxPreps Male National Athlete of the Year.

He also went viral after shattering the backboard with a vicious slam dunk against Morehead High School in February.

On the football field, Harrison’s accomplishments are even more impressive. He helped lead the Rams to a state championship in football as well.

He played both tight end and defensive end for the 15-1 champion Rams during the 2023-24 season.

On offense, Harrison recorded 62 catches, 940 yards receiving and 16 touchdowns during his sophomore campaign, according to MaxPreps .

On defense, he recorded 76 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, nine sacks and 30 quarterback hurries.

In the championship game against Clinton High School, Harrison recorded five catches for 95 yards and two touchdowns in the 28-18 win for the Rams, according to MaxPreps . He also recorded six tackles and a sack.

    Recruiting outlook

While Harrison has received offers from many top colleges to play football, one major local university wants him to play both sports.

Harrison says that he desires to play both football and basketball in college.

If he were to go to UNC, he would follow in the footsteps of several other Tar Heel greats who played both sports.

247Sports lists his current interest in the Tar Heels as warm. UNC is the only college currently listed as such.

The most famous example is of course Julius Peppers, who went on to become a Pro Football Hall of Fame player for the Carolina Panthers.
