WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, people in the Triad feel for their neighbors in western North Carolina.

People are loading up their cars and heading west to bring supplies for basic needs. Winston-Salem stores are feeling that impact.

It was the last stop for Madeline Berry before leaving for Ashville to pick up her mother who has been stuck there for days.

She grabbed as much water as she could because her mother’s neighborhood has been without water since the storm.

“The storm hit Thursday, and then I didn’t hear my mom’s voice until yesterday which was Tuesday,” Berry said.

Berry lost connection last week with her mother and best friends who live in Asheville

“That’s the thing: We’re neighbors. Winston is neighbors. We’ve all spent our lives going up to these mountains. Our friends have moved to these mountains. I moved from these mountains … This is my home,” Berry said.

Now she’s making the drive to take them supplies and move her mother out of her home.

She’s grabbing as many supplies as her car can hold or as much as the store has in stock because many lost everything.

She knows it’s the basics people need right now. It was just a matter of how much she could get.

“And I got some toilet paper because it was running really low,” Berry said.
