    Woman finds grenade while cleaning Westlake home, bomb unit responds

    WESTLAKE, Ohio (WJW) – A Westlake woman called police after finding a grenade inside her home while cleaning on Thursday.

    According to a press release from the Westlake Police Department, officers were called around 10:30 a.m. about a suspicious item found in a woman’s home.

    According to police, the woman said she was cleaning out her home after her husband passed away. While cleaning a closet, she found old “souvenirs” that her husband had collected.

    According to police, the woman described the items as grenades.

    When the Westshore Enforcement Bureau Bomb Unit responded to the home, an old Japanese mortar and grenade were found and taken to the unit’s storage bunker to be destroyed.

    The Westlake Sargent on the bomb squad identified the items found as a Japanese Type 89 Knee Mortar and Japanese Type 97 Hand Grenade, both pictured above.
