VIDEO: Northern lights dance over NE Ohio

(WJW) – Have you seen them? Skywatchers have been captivated by the stunning glow of an aurora, or “ northern lights ,” over Northeast Ohio lately.

Late last week, FOX 8 meteorologists reported that a coronal mass ejection (CME) could cause a strong solar storm, meaning the aurora borealis may be visible farther south than normal, including here in Ohio.

Thankfully, in Northeast Ohio, the skies have been clear paving the way for some spectacular views. The series of pictures below were captured by FOX 8 photographer Eric Hunker at about 1 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8. He also captured a time-lapse video (above) that shows the lights appearing to dance.

You can see when the Northern Lights may be visible from Northeast Ohio again by checking the visibility forecast provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

To spot the aurora in Northeast Ohio, you will likely need to look low on the horizon using a camera with a long exposure.

NOAA says the northern lights can been seen just after sunset to just before sunrise. According to experts, the best time to catch the lights is typically between dusk and midnight.
