(WGHP) — One of the greatest players in the history of the Carolina Panthers appears to be moving onto the next stage of his career.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter announced X on Thursday morning that Cam Newton is signing with ESPN to be a commentator.

Newton, 35, will primarily work on the show ‘First Take’ with Winston-Salem State University alum Stephen A. Smith. Newton will debut on the show on Friday.

“Cam Newton’s addition to First Take brings an electrifying presence, enhancing our roster of top-tier personalities. ESPN Executive Vice President David Roberts said. “His dynamic charisma combined with the high-profile debates alongside Stephen A. Smith, will create compelling, must-watch television for fans.”

Newton spent 10 of his 11 NFL seasons with the Carolina Panthers after being selected with the No. 1 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. He won NFL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year in 2015 and helped lead the Panthers to a 15-1 record and appearance in Super Bowl 50.

Newton’s career was beset by injuries following that MVP campaign. He was released by Carolina in 2020 and spent one season with the New England Patriots before returning to the Panthers in 2021.

Although Newton has never officially retired, he has not played in the NFL since that 2021 season with the Panthers and his signing with ESPN likely signals the unofficial end of his playing days.
