36,000+ still without power in Buncombe County after Hurricane Helene

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — On Thursday, thousands are still without power nearly two weeks after Hurricane Helene slammed Western North Carolina.

According to Duke Energy , as of Thursday afternoon, Oct. 10, 2024, nearly 50,000 customers remain without power with more than 3,300 active outages in the state.

Buncombe County has the most outages, with more than 36,000 customers still without power and 1,800 active outages reported. As far as an estimated time of restoration, Duke Energy’s website states, “Disaster recovery in progress.”

Several other counties still have pockets of outages including Haywood County with more than 200, Henderson County with more than 360, Mitchell County with more than 230, and Robeson County with more than 270. Multiple homes in some of these counties do not exist anymore.

According to Duke Energy, in Western North Carolina, customers whose properties are inaccessible or not able to receive power may be without electricity for an extended period of time as crews work alongside government agencies to rebuild critical infrastructure.

Duke Energy said for all other customers in heavily impacted areas, they anticipate restoring power within a week. Please click here for ongoing restoration updates.
