Woman who shot, killed mother in Winston-Salem during fight at party sentenced to 13-17 years

FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — A woman will spend 13 to 17 years in prison after shooting and killing a mother in Winston-Salem in 2020, according to the office of Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O’Neill.

Terika Shannail Sims, 43, pled guilty on Friday in Forsyth County Superior Court to second-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill inflicting serious injury and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Early in the morning on May 9, 2020, officers with the Winston-Salem Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at a home in the 900 block of Woodcote Drive.

The victims, Malika Charmane Davis and Tyrone Lamont Davis, were both shot and taken by EMS to the hospital. Malika was shot once in the abdomen and died. She was 32 years old and the mother of two children.

Her brother Tyrone was shot once and discharged from the hospital.

Officers learned that a party was happening at Tyrone’s home on May 9. Investigators say that before the shooting, the Sims got in an argument over the phone with a relative of Malika and Tyrone.

During this argument, Sims said she would go home to get her gun. Forensic analysis of cell tower data revealed that she did briefly go back to her home before heading to the crime scene, presumably to arm herself.

Sism then arrived at the party and started a fight outside. Malika and Tyrone went outside to tell the Sims to leave. She then got into a fight with Malika.

During the fight, Sims shot Malika. She then shot Tyrone while he tried to help his sister.

Sims left the scene before police could arrive. She voluntarily turned herself in to police on July 16, 2020.

Superior Court Judge David Hall of Forsyth County sentenced Sims to 164 months minimum to 209 months maximum at the Division of Adult Corrections.
