GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — A minor league hockey expansion team will be making their home in Greensboro and they are asking people to help come up with a name.

The Greensboro expansion team will compete in the ECHL ice hockey league. The ECHL serves as a farm system to the American Hockey League and National Hockey League.

Goodbye, Greensboro Coliseum! ‘Iconic’ venue announces new name

“The ECHL is proud to welcome our 30th Member by returning to the Greensboro, North Carolina market,” ECHL Commissioner Ryan Crelin said. “Greensboro holds a special place in the ECHL’s history and growth, and it will be a joyful moment to drop the puck once again in October 2025 and bring professional hockey back to the city for fans to once again cheer for their hometown team.”

The Greensboro team will be the 30th franchise in the ECHL and will begin play during the 2025-26 season.

The team will be operated by Zawyer Sports & Entertainment, the same people who manage the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers.

“We are very excited for the opportunity to launch an ECHL franchise in Greensboro,” Zawyer Sports CEO Andy Kaufmann said. “We look forward to turning Tournament Town into Hockey Town with a family-friendly atmosphere that will bring people together from all around the community.”

The team will play at First Horizon Coliseum (formerly known as the Greensboro Coliseum).

The fans also will be able to have input on what the team’s name will be and can submit their ideas on the team’s website .

This is not Greensboro’s first experience with hockey, there have been two previous ECHL franchises in the Greensboro Monarchs (1989-1995) and Greensboro Generals (1999-2004).

The NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes also played their first two seasons in Greensboro before moving to Raleigh.
