What Drake Maye said about his ‘rookie mistake’ on Matthew Judon’s pick-6

Drake Maye made two of the most noteworthy plays at Patriots practice on Friday. One went in his favor, and the other did not.

Maye hit fellow rookie Ja’Lynn Polk down the sideline on a play-action pass for a big gain. Polk jumped for the ball and caught it with both hands as he crashed to the ground. The throw was a bit wobbly, but it still made its way to its intended target.

Maye praised Polk for his efforts to rack the ball down.

“He made a nice catch,” Maye said. “That wasn’t a great throw, but Polk made a nice catch. Great player. I looked off the safety a little bit but he made a nice play. Just give him a chance, right? That’s what he’s here for, just making plays for us so I’m looking forward to seeing more JP.”

The play that didn’t go so great for Maye was a short pass to Rhamondre Stevenson. Linebacker Matthew Judon stepped in front of it and picked it off.

Judon, wearing his signature red hooded sweatshirt in the Foxborough heat, took off for the endzone, scoring a pick-6.

The mistake didn’t seem to faze Maye. He admitted that the timing was off and his read could have been better.

“Just a rookie mistake, no pun intended,” Maye said. “Had a deep shot and was going to throw to the flat late and in this league, they cover the running back so you have to look out there before you throw it.”

Overall, Maye went 8-for-11 during the 11-on-11 scrimmages and 9-for-13 during the 7-on-7 portion, according to the Globe’s Christopher Price. The numbers were comparable to the ones veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett (8-for-11, 9-for-12) put up.

“I feel like I have a pretty good grasp,” he said. “I feel like I’m throwing the football well. There are a lot of concepts with [offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt] and [quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney], who do a good job breaking it down … It’s going good. A lot more plays coming, so I have to keep those in mind.”
