The New England Patriots found themselves in the headlines quite a bit over the last week or so, which generally during this time of year is not exactly a great thing.

From an unfortunate situation with the health of star defensive tackle Christian Barmore to contract disputes which played out in the open with Matthew Judon and Davon Godchaux , it was a turbulent time for new head coach Jerod Mayo.

Mayo was asked by reporters what it's like as a first-time head coach having to put out little fires like this and if it gave him good experience. While he downplayed the exact severity of the events, he did admit it was good for him to see these things play out for the first time under his watch.

"I mean, it was good. These things happen on every single team, and it's good to get that experience dealing with frustrations, contract negotiations, frustrations on playing time, and things like that. It's part of the job," Mayo said . "Like my mom said, 'You want to be a head coach, huh?' I do. But once again, look, it's a learning experience for me and I will continue to evolve and just try to be a better coach every day, just how I expect our players to be better players every day."

Mayo will get his first chance to coach in a real NFL game this Thursday when the team kicks off their first preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.

Just another day of learning on the job for the Pats new head coach.
