2 from Hoke County charged with murder in shooting death of Richmond County teen
ROCKINGHAM — Two Hoke County teens have been charged in the fatal shooting of a Richmond County teen. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday morning announced the arrest of 18-year-old Kevin Jonathan Murphy and an unnamed 17-year-old, both of Raeford, in the death of 17-year-old Damarion Wall.
First Bancorp shares rise on earnings report
Shares of Southern Pines-based First Bancorp gained more than 13% early Thursday after the parent of First Bank reported strong earnings. The company had a second-quarter profit of $28.7 million, or 70 cents per share, versus $29.4 million a year earlier. For the first half of the year, First Bancorp earned $54 million, versus $44.6 million, in the same period last year.

New SCC Scholarship Honors Buddy Spong
The Seven Lakes Kiwanis Club is raising funds for a new scholarship named in honor of Buddy Spong that will assist Sandhills Community College students. The legacy scholarship was announced during a celebration of life for Spong at BPAC’s Owens Auditorium, on Sunday, July 21 on the SCC campus. A retired educator and active community volunteer, Spong died on March 15, five months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
