Jeffrey S. Ellis
Jeffrey Scott Ellis, 54, of Pinehurst, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at FirstHealth Hospice House, in Pinehurst. Jeff battled a long illness but was blessed to pass surrounded by all his family. Jeff was born in Medina, Ohio, on March 4, 1970, to the late William Perry Freeman Ellis and Dian Barber Ellis.
Village Discusses Short-Term Rental Enforcement
Short-term rental code enforcement was back on the docket for the Pinehurst Village Council during a Tuesday evening work session. Council members John Taylor and Barbara Ficklin recently met with elements of senior village staff in an informational session aimed at identifying and enforcing Pinehurst’s STR ordinance. The two were not on the council when the ordinance was passed in 2022.

Southern Pines native Jason Coleman has been named the U.S. Department of State’s chief budget director for the bureaus of Near Eastern Affairs and South-Central Asia. In his new role, Coleman is responsible for over $2 billion allocated to the operations of 29 embassies, 14 consulates, 18 domestic offices and other critical American interests abroad.
Scotland’s BOE director debunks voter registration misinformation
LAURINBURG — The head of the Scotland County Board of Elections is warning potential voters of misinformation being spread about voter registration. BOE Director Dell Parker told The Laurinburg Exchange Friday that it has come to the office’s attention that several voter registration drives are occurring throughout the county consisting of individuals and/or groups who are not affiliated with the county’s elections office.

The World Golf Hall of Fame has returned to its original home in Pinehurst, NC. The facility opened just prior to the 2024 U.S. Open at the new Golf House Pinehurst campus adjacent to Pinehurst Country Club. The first floor of the building houses the USGA Experience which includes artifacts from the USGA Museum and Library. On the second floor is the WGHOF where visitors will find a new Hall of Fame locker room experience. Each locker representing all inductees maintains a collection of gear and artifacts that assists in telling that player’s story and rich history. Here, you will see Bob Jones’ Spalding 2-wood. Jack Nicklaus’ MacGregor golf bag from the 1965 Masters and Johnny Miller’s clubs, ball and champions golf medal from the 1973 U.S. Open at Oakmont. And so much more.
Man shot 4 times with pellet gun in Aberdeen altercation
On Wednesday afternoon, law enforcement was called to Woodgreen Apartments on the outskirts of Aberdeen following reports of a domestic dispute that resulted in a physical altercation. The initial report came in shortly before 12:30 p.m. and stated that a victim had been shot with a pellet gun, prompting an immediate response from local authorities.

Sanford man released from Lee jail charged in Cameron shooting
Jul. 25—A Sanford man who allegedly shot up a Sanford home was released on bond and then allegedly shot up a home in Cameron before being arrested over two weeks later after a high-speed chase. Amari Rayvon Matos, 21, was 18 at the time of the alleged shooting of a Sanford residence at 4412 Lenity Circle on Jan. 21, 2022. Radie was born on October 4, 1930 to the late Ralph and Cornelia Priest McCraney. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Grier Deese; daughter, Donna L. Deese; brother, Ralph Calvin McCraney and sister, Ruby C. Moody.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 26, 2024 at 4:00PM at Mt. Pleasant Church with Rev. Dr. Greg Poplin and Pastor Chandler Wilkes officiating. A time of visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 3:00-4:00PM. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Carthage man arrested for felony sexual exploitation of minor
Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields announced an arrest on Thursday following an investigation in the Carthage area. On May 4, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office initiated an undercover investigation after receiving information regarding an individual allegedly in possession of child sexual abuse material. This investigation has culminated in the arrest of Robert Thomas, age 45, of Heritage Farm Road, Carthage.
Post 49 welcomed back to Hamlet from American Legion state finals
HAMLET — The Post 49 baseball team had a welcoming committee waiting across from City Hall for their return home from the American Legion state finals late Monday night. The team picked up a law enforcement escort by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office when they crossed the Pee Dee River. The Rockingham Police Department assisted as they passed through the city limits, with the Hamlet Police Department joining the convoy in the final stretch.
