New SCC Scholarship Honors Buddy Spong
The Seven Lakes Kiwanis Club is raising funds for a new scholarship named in honor of Buddy Spong that will assist Sandhills Community College students. The legacy scholarship was announced during a celebration of life for Spong at BPAC’s Owens Auditorium, on Sunday, July 21 on the SCC campus. A retired educator and active community volunteer, Spong died on March 15, five months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Arrest Man Following Drugs Found at Samarcand Training Academy
An arrest was made by the Moore County Sheriff's Office after methamphetamine was found on the Samarcand Training Academy campus Tuesday. Richard Derrick Smith, 45, of Seven Lakes, was arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia and was committed to the Moore County Detention Center under a $7,500 secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in Moore County District Court on Aug. 8.
Both Parties Detained After Man Shoots at Trespasser's Vehicle
The Moore County Sheriff's Office arrested both parties involved in an altercation Monday after an reported trespassing and robbery. Deputies responded Monday to a report of a trespasser being held at gunpoint at an uninhabited residence in Robbins.

Jeffrey S. Ellis
Jeffrey Scott Ellis, 54, of Pinehurst, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at FirstHealth Hospice House, in Pinehurst. Jeff battled a long illness but was blessed to pass surrounded by all his family. Jeff was born in Medina, Ohio, on March 4, 1970, to the late William Perry Freeman Ellis and Dian Barber Ellis.
World Golf Hall of Fame
The World Golf Hall of Fame has returned to its original home in Pinehurst, NC. The facility opened just prior to the 2024 U.S. Open at the new Golf House Pinehurst campus adjacent to Pinehurst Country Club. The first floor of the building houses the USGA Experience which includes artifacts from the USGA Museum and Library. On the second floor is the WGHOF where visitors will find a new Hall of Fame locker room experience. Each locker representing all inductees maintains a collection of gear and artifacts that assists in telling that player’s story and rich history. Here, you will see Bob Jones’ Spalding 2-wood. Robbins Hardware is open for business
After years of anticipation for Robbins Hardware, the wait is over. Robbins Hardware opened in June after seven years of construction. When brothers and owners Darrell Lee Upchurch and Johnny Upchurch began this adventure, the building at 111 Salisbury Street was condemned. “The entire building had to be gutted,” said Darell.
Post 49 welcomed back to Hamlet from American Legion state finals
HAMLET — The Post 49 baseball team had a welcoming committee waiting across from City Hall for their return home from the American Legion state finals late Monday night. The team picked up a law enforcement escort by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office when they crossed the Pee Dee River. The Rockingham Police Department assisted as they passed through the city limits, with the Hamlet Police Department joining the convoy in the final stretch.
