The new rule was recently approved by the Framingham Traffic Commission and City Council.

The new traffic rules, which represent the first update in more than 30 years, call for the banning of all vehicles with commercial license plates from parking on any city streets between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday through Saturday or anytime on Sunday. A violator can receive a $100 ticket.

The city currently has an overnight parking ban for any commercial vehicle with a capacity of more than one ton (2,000 pounds). But starting Sept. 1, the standard applies to any vehicle with a commercial license plate.

The new traffic regulations also increase the resident parking sticker fee from $20 to $25. This rule applies to streets with residents-only parking.

City's new traffic rules also address snow removal

The new regulations also include rules regarding snow removal. Starting Sept. 1, residents are banned from shoveling snow and ice into the street and no person "shall pile snow or ice in any roadway or any sidewalk near an intersection so as to obstruct the vision above a height of 4 feet within 20 feet of the intersection," according to the regulations.

Violators can be fined $25 for the first offense and up to $100 for a third offense. Commercial properties with six or more units can be fined $50 for the first offense and $300 for the third and subsequent offenses.

“The latest published version of Framingham’s traffic regulations was last revised in December 1988," said Chris Brinley, chair of the Framingham Traffic Commission, in a prepared statement. "The Traffic Commission began working on a complete rewrite in the fall of 2021.”

The new rules only apply to city streets and not private streets or municipal parking lots.
