FRAMINGHAM A cat had to be resuscitated on Monday after a kitchen fire in a Beulah Street apartment unit, fire officials said.

Two cats were in the apartment at 32 Beulah St. when firefighters responded to a report of a fire, Assistant Fire Chief John Schultz said.

"We got two cats out, but one wasn't breathing when we brought it out," he said.

Firefighters handed the cats to a paramedic from Brewster Ambulance , and a pet animal mask that was donated to the department was used to help the cat breathe again. The conditions of the two cats are not currently known.

The masks were donated by the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association . Framingham Fire Chief Michael Dutcher said that while this wasn't the first time they've been used, they haven't been used "as successfully as they were here."

The fire was contained to one unit in the Riverside Condos. The fire appeared to be an "unattended kitchen fire," Schultz said. The residents were not home. The rest of the multi-unit building was evacuated but was later let back in. The fire and damage were contained to the one unit, which is now uninhabitable.

"It was quick response with early notification and a quick knockdown," Schultz said.
