In recognition of Black History Month and its importance to our country, MetroWest Medical Center’s general surgeon Dr. Bankole Samuel has shared his thoughts with us:. Sometimes I am asked the question “What is Black History Month.” The answer seems obvious, but it is multifaceted. Black History Month is a celebration and acknowledgment of achievements of Black people. It spans across centuries, stretching from pre-emancipation to today. It is prudent to remember the past so we can avoid making the same mistakes. This is a way of ensuring a better future.

Bernice W. (Whiting) Ross Strom, 93, former Framingham Town Meeting Member
Bernice Arena Ross Strom (nee Whiting) was born on March 10, 1930, in Toledo, Ohio, passed away on February 21, 2024, in Framingham, Massachusetts, at the age of 93. She was the daughter of Milton and Mable “Velma” Whiting, and a devoted mother to Laura Ross Ginter, her Husband Gary of Washington, Kenneth W. Ross and his wife Dawn of Framingham, Deborah Ross Nixon, her Husband John of Connecticut, and Robert W. Ross and his fiancé Kindra Powers of Hopedale. She was also Mimi to 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Bernice was predeceased by her husbands, Warren R. Ross, and Kenneth A. Strom.
MassBay Alum to Run the 2024 Boston Marathon to Support Student Scholarships
MassBay Community College alum Dan O’Neil of Dedham, MA, will run the 128th Boston Marathon on Monday, April 15, 2024, with a goal of raising $5,000 for MassBay’s general student scholarship fund. The MassBay General Scholarship provides critical funds to students who need assistance paying for tuition, textbooks, and emergency costs that may arise during the semester.
Shedding Light on Seasonal Affective Disorder During Wintertime
Winter is one of the hardest times of the year for many, and feelings of sadness, loss, or isolation are very common. The holidays are over, the days are cold and short, less light for Vitamin D due to more cloudiness, there are fewer nutrient-rich foods around and it’s harder to get exercise than in the nicer months. It’s all a recipe for high anxiety and suffering from a type of depression called Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD.
Meet Ellen Adams, RN, of MetroWest Medical Center Leonard Morse Hospital
Ellen Adams, RN, has been with MetroWest Medical Center Leonard Morse Hospital for one year. What Ellen likes most about her job the connections between the patients and the staff, and the times they can laugh together. Her mother is a nurse and she motivated Ellen to go into healthcare. She says, “I’m a people person by nature so it makes sense to work in healthcare to help people.” The best part of Pam’s career as nurse is seeing patients dramatically improve. “That warms my heart.” Her most memorable experience while working at MetroWest was working on Christmas and seeing staff and patients celebrate together the best we could with staff working and patients not being home for the holiday. In her spare time, Ellen likes to watch sports, play volleyball and softball, cook and bake, and socialize with her family and friends.
MetroWest Medical Center Stresses Importance of Women’s Heart Health During American Heart Month
MetroWest Medical Center is bringing attention to heart health risk factors for women as part of its larger focus for heart health during American Heart Month in February. An estimated one in five female deaths are caused by heart disease, which is the leading cause of death for women in the United States. It’s important for women to be aware of the risk factors, signs and symptoms of heart disease.

This program features the Booster Suite, a group of solo pieces previously performed as a group with the dancers of Moving West Dance Theater in June 2022. Music of Heitor Villa-Lobos, Leo Brouwer, Francois Couperin, and others. Pianist Leonardo Ciampa joins Dave in performance of the complete Castelnuovo-Tedesco Concerto #1 for guitar and orchestra. NEA Grant recipient and competition winner Dave McLellan brings a lifetime of perspective to the music of Spain, Brazil, Cuba, Scotland, and the U.S.

New Danforth Exhibitions Merge Past and Present
FRAMINGHAM – The Spring Exhibitions at Framingham State University’s Danforth Art Museum merge the past and the present and create a space for storytelling, discovery, and understanding. In three exhibitions in a wide range of media, artists peel back layers of history and confront the past through visual interpretations that provide broader understanding of the present.
Y’ladim BaTeva: Summer Forest Adventure
Various conservation areas in Wayland, Sudbury, and Framingham. Y’ladim BaTeva Summer Forest Adventure gives children the opportunity to explore the wonders of woods, fields and streams in an informal way while framing their experience through the lens of Judaism. Children play games, explore trails and rivers, brooks and ponds, and make friends with a tree. They investigate habitats and watersheds, make nature crafts, keep a nature journal, learn nature blessings, and have quiet time each day. Children will spend part of one day doing a service project at the Framingham Community Farm, helping to grow fresh food for a local food pantry.
Shabbat Afternoon Hike
Nobscot Scout Reservation, 1 Nobscot Road, Sudbury. Enjoy a Shabbat afternoon hike through the springtime woods to the lookout at Tipling Rock, punctuated with stops to share themes of Shabbat. The hike will be led by R. Josh Breindel & Cantor Vera Broekhuysen and will be over easy to moderate trails at a moderate pace. All ages are welcome. Calling all young children! Bring a caregiver and come to Drumlin Farm for a morning of animal fun! Visit the baby lambs and pigs, sing Shabbat songs, do an art project and have a snack. Full Moon Walk
Greenways Conservation Area, 22 Green Way, Wayland. Experience the woods, fields, and river by the light of the full Sap Moon for a unique and peaceful experience of welcoming Shabbat. With the sun setting in one direction and the full moon rising in the other, we’ll enjoy the sights and sounds of nature in the evening on a leisurely walk across the meadow to the Sudbury River led by Rabbi Katy Allen. Children and adults of all ages and spiritual traditions are welcome, and you are invited to bring a poem, story or song about the moon, spring, the river or Shabbat. This is a great opportunity to get outside, share the joys of nature in the evening, and have your spirit revived. The walk will last about an hour and a quarter. RSVP coming at.
Havdalah Campfire
Nobscot Scout Reservation, 1 Nobscot Road, Sudbury. Take a short evening hike to a cabin in the woods and gather around the campfire. As darkness falls, share stories, sing songs, do wildcrafting, and mark the end of Shabbat. Break bread together and enjoy a potluck vegetarian dinner by the fire.
