The Paralympics kick off this Wednesday in Paris and to mark the opening of the Games, our reporters went to meet the French athletes who have brought home gold medals from previous editions of the event. They tell us about the challenges they faced, the obstacles they overcame and their hopes for the 2024 Paralympics. FRANCE 24's David Gilberg and Aurore Dupuis report.

The Paralympic Games will showcase more than 4,400 Paralympic athletes competing in 22 sports for 549 medal events. Events include para archery, para athletics, para badminton, blind football, boccia, para canoe, para cycling, para equestrian, goalball, para judo, para powerlifting, para rowing, shooting para sport, sitting volleyball, para swimming, para table tennis, para taekwondo, para triathlon, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair fencing, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair tennis.

How to watch the Paris 2024 Paralympics in the U.S., including Opening Ceremony, channel and timings

The Paris Paralympics begin on Wednesday with a spectacular opening ceremony in the centre of the French capital, firing the starting gun on 11 days of intense competition. Just as for the opening ceremony of the Olympics on the River Seine in July, the ceremony will take place away from the main stadium for the first time at a Paralympics.

 Five French athletes came together to light the cauldron signalling the beginning of the Paris Paralympics at the opening ceremony on Wednesday, 28 August.Charles-Antoine Kouakou, Alexis Hanquinquant, Fabien Lamirault, Nantenin Keïta, and Elodie Lorandi ignited the flames at Jardin des Tuileries between the Louvre and Place de la Concorde.It followed an athletes’ parade, during which thousands of competitors travelled down the Avenue des Champs-Élysées in front of an estimated 65,000 spectators.The competition begins on Thursday and continues until the closing ceremony on Sunday, 8 September.

Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife are among the six people still missing after a mega-yacht sank off the coast of Italy Monday morning, according to officials and reports.

Bloomer remains unaccounted for after the Bayesian, a 184-foot luxury sailboat, capsized with 22 people aboard off the port of Porticello after it was struck by a tornado, said Salvatore Cocina, head of the civil protection agency in Sicily.



His wife is also missing, the Daily Mail reported.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, 59, and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, have also not been found since the ship wrecked.
