Hilltown Tents trying to win Tri-County Baseball League title in first year of existence
The Tri-County Baseball League of Western Massachusetts has undergone numerous changes since its inception in 1929, and this summer, a new area team has emerged. With Teddy Bears Pools, the longtime area team, struggling to fill out a roster last year, former Frontier player Sam Schreiber came up with the idea to form a new team. Schreiber reached out to Owen Phelps, a former Greenfield player who now plays collegiate baseball at Castleton University in Vermont, to see if he’d like to coach.
Sue Kramer: Film has key local tie
In the article about “Janet Planet,” the author wrote about the many ways the film ties into our local area: it was filmed locally, the writer/director is from Amherst, local folks were cast as extras [“‘Janet Planet’ comes in orbit,” Recorder, June 22]. I was surprised there was no mention of the fact that the main actress in the film, Julianne Nicholson, spent most of her early childhood in North Leverett. She lived with her mom, herbalist Kate Gilday, high up on Chestnut Hill, in a cabin with no running water or electricity. (For high school, Jules moved back to the Boston area to live with her dad.) Jules has had a long career in film, TV, and theater. living in New York, LA, and London. She was so happy to be back in Franklin County during the filming. She even got to see the mountain laurel blooming in Wendell, on the road her family always took to Laurel Lake. Eveline MacDougall: A perfect summer day in Franklin County
A recent Saturday reminded me of how fortunate we are to live in western Massachusetts. After a visit to the Greenfield Farmers’ Market, I headed to Shelburne for a program of farming fun and edification presented by Fabric of Life. I learned a lot, and had the thrilling opportunity to plow a garden plot behind well-trained oxen, and later behind gorgeous Belgian draft horses. Being accompanied by a nine-year-old friend accentuated my sense of wonder. We later headed to Charlemont for a 5 p.m. Mohawk Trail Concert featuring the Adaskin String Trio, hearing world-class music close to home. What could be better? A perfect summer day in Franklin County.

Despite fewer firework-related injuries compared to other states, Massachusetts still sees dozens of instances of injury and property destruction from the devices every year. And Springfield first responders are preparing for an increased number of calls in the coming days. Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden and Hampshire counties accounted for 71 fireworks-related...

Turners Falls resource center offers help to grandparents raising their grandchildren
TURNERS FALLS – The nuclear family is defined as a father, a mother and their child or children living in one household. But various circumstances often disrupt that “perfect picture,” and an American family can take on many forms. In fact, information from the U.S. Census Bureau a few years ago reported there were 2½ million grandparents raising their grandchildren, and this figure had increased by 30% over the past decade. Unexpected changes in family dynamics and living situations can put a strain on people who aren’t sure where to turn. This is where grandparent-support groups, like the one organized through The United Arc in Turners Falls, come in.
