DNR announces burn ban for Lower Basin
As of Friday morning, Benton, Franklin, and Walla Walla are now in a burn ban. The order came down from the state Department of Natural Resources just after midnight. Officials say to expect it to last all season long. The ban prohibits burns that are not subject to a permit. In general, those are fires 10 feet or less in diameter. Permitted burns are still allowed but are subject to the permit's conditions. Any campfires outside of an approved campground are also banned. Officials with the DNR say they're regularly evaluating the fire situation noting the majority of the fires that have happened in the state have been wind-driven. We've reached out to the Benton County Fire Marshal, and are connecting to a Franklin County Fire District Fire chief to see when either county could announce a ban as they follow the DNR's lead.
